Matariki – a time to appreciate the wonderful kaimoana we have in Aotearoa New Zealand
The rise of the star cluster Matariki signals the start of the Māori New Year. The cluster is named after its mother whetu, or star, Matariki that rises in midwinter and encourages the gathering of all people. The cluster is also known as the Pleiades or Seven Sisters.
Matariki is associated with well-being, reflection, hope and a connection to the environment. It is a time to come together with friends and family to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future.
Like the Western New Year, Matariki is also a time to set intentions or resolutions and you can wish upon each of the whetu or stars depending on what you’re hoping for. Waitā is the star we associate with the ocean and all the creatures from Tangaroa (god of the ocean). Love kaimoana? Hoping that seafood will be abundant in the coming year? Send your tribute to Waitā.
Matariki is a chance to give respect to the land and sea on which we live. It is a time to appreciate some of the wonderful kai we have available here in Aotearoa New Zealand. It is a time to acknowledge what we have and what we have to give.
